In an escalating global controversy, the Russian government has formally called on French authorities to substantiate their allegations against the head of the Telegram messaging app, Pavel Durov. These claims, which name Telegram as a tool for enabling criminal activities including child pornography and drug sales, have garnered much attention. Russian authorities have demanded France provide more conclusive evidence before further moves are made against Durov.

Case Background

The controversy originated when France accused Pavel Durov and his app, Telegram, in relation to probes into unlawful matters. The service, which has now established itself as more of a messenger with end-to-end encryption, has been accused of being a breeding ground for criminals. French police arrested Durov claiming that his platform was involved in some sort of unlawful activities.

However, all the officials from Russia have dismissed the accusations as baseless and devoid of any solid evidence. As reported by Reuters, the Kremlin has now called on France to provide concrete evidence of such allegations.

Kremlin’s Statement

The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, emphasized the need for credible evidence in addressing the allegations. “Such accusations must be based on serious evidence. Without it, these claims lack legitimacy,” said Peskov during a press briefing. The Russian government appears to be taking a firm stance in protecting one of its high-profile tech entrepreneurs.

The incident has led to diplomatic friction between Russia and France, with the Kremlin hinting at potential countermeasures if these accusations persist without proof. Moscow’s stance indicates that it will not allow the allegations to escalate into a full-blown political conflict.

Russian Stance and Possible Future Actions

Russia continues to defend Durov, portraying him as a victim of baseless charges aimed at undermining Telegram’s influence. Telegram has over 700 million users globally, and Russian officials are framing this controversy as an attempt to discredit the platform’s reputation.

While Moscow insists on transparency, they are also warning that any further actions against Durov without valid proof could result in a strong diplomatic response. Peskov hinted at possible measures, including diplomatic pressure and potential retaliatory actions if no evidence is provided. For now, Durov remains at the center of a diplomatic showdown between Russia and France, with the future of Telegram and its global operations hanging in the balance.
