Your Next iPhone 16 Pro Will Have a Subtle Change in the Box for the First Time in History

If you’re one of the lucky ones to buy an iPhone 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max next month, you might notice a very subtle change in the box. It’s not an extra component, a change to the charger, or anything related to those famous Apple stickers. Instead, it’s a small detail that reveals where the device was made. For the first time ever, the unit might not be sourced from China.

According to Bloomberg, several sources connected to Foxconn have reported that the ‘Pro’ models of the iPhone 16 will be manufactured in India. In case you didn’t know, Foxconn is the company that assembles Apple phones, a task it has primarily done in China, but not exclusively.

The source also claims that many of these iPhone 16 Pros manufactured in India will be shipped to the United States and Europe. Apple’s most advanced model is not as popular in India, so a large portion of the assembled units will be exported.

So, if you buy an iPhone 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max next September, it might come with a label on the box that says, “Designed by Apple in California, assembled in India.” Until now, every iPhone Pro has been assembled in China—none have left the world’s most populous country.

Does It Matter That Your iPhone 16 Is Made in India?

The reality is, no, it doesn’t matter. The company responsible for assembling the iPhone, Foxconn, is the same in both India and China. Over time, labor and production costs in India have become similar to those in China, leading many companies to move part of their operations to India.

India also imposes very high tariffs on imported goods, so Apple saves a lot of money by manufacturing the phones it sells to Indian users locally. It’s much cheaper for the company to assemble in India than to pay the extra duties to import an iPhone 16 from China.

For this reason, Apple has already been manufacturing some of its cheaper iPhones in India, although it hadn’t yet taken the step to do the same with the Pro models. This year, things could change, and the surplus units not sold in India might be the ones American and European users receive.

In fact, it’s quite possible that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be sold in Europe with different labels on the box: “Assembled in India” and “Assembled in China.” While the quality or details won’t be affected, it’s an interesting point for Apple fans.
