Google is about to announce a new version of its popular Chromecast, a device known for bringing popular streaming apps to TVs. After appearing in images and having some information released last week under the name “Google TV Streamer,” the device has now received certification from the American regulatory body FCC, indicating the connections it will have.

The approval was not requested by Google itself but by Quanta Computer, which is responsible for manufacturing products such as the Pixelbook, Pixel Slate, and Pixelbook Go. This suggests that the partnership will extend to the new device from the search giant. The new device was identified under the code GRS6B, following the pattern seen in other Google products.

Although the certification does not provide details about specifications or features, it offers insight into how Google will use its new TV Streamer by listing the ports and connections available on the product.

Connectivity and Physical Ports

The device will support Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac wireless connections and can connect to the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. It will also feature Bluetooth and Thread. The Thread radio connection has been adopted for smart home integration, allowing direct communication with Internet of Things (IoT) devices. It is expected to be included in the Pixel 9 line as well, enhancing the integration of the Google ecosystem.

Regarding physical ports, the device will have HDMI, Ethernet, and USB ports, with two operating modes:

  • Full mode: HDMI port connected to TV and Ethernet connected to a WLAN access point (AP).
  • Standalone mode: Details about this mode are unclear, but it might allow the device to be compatible with other types of displays besides TVs, using wireless connections and a power adapter. The USB port version hasn’t been identified yet, but it is likely to use a USB-C port for power and data.

There is no confirmed launch date for the Google TV Streamer, but the company may announce the product on August 13, the same date it will officially present the new Pixel 9 cell phones.
