OpenAI has finally launched the much-awaited memory feature for ChatGPT. This feature allows ChatGPT to remember everything you ask it. The chatbot, powered by artificial intelligence, will keep track of all your conversations to learn more about you. The purpose of this memory feature is to enhance the usefulness of future interactions.

In a recent post on its Twitter account, OpenAI announced the availability of the memory feature to all ChatGPT Plus users. According to the company, using the memory is simple: just initiate a new chat and inform ChatGPT about what you want it to remember. It’s important to note that this feature is optional and can be turned off from the settings menu.
Memory is now available to all ChatGPT Plus users. Using Memory is easy: just start a new chat and tell ChatGPT anything you’d like it to remember.

For ChatGPT Plus members, memory is automatically activated. You can find this new feature in the “Personalization” section of the Settings menu. Once activated, you’ll have access to a list of memories stored by the chatbot about you, which you can manage according to your preferences.
If there’s something you want ChatGPT to forget, you can instruct it to do so directly from the chat window or delete it from the memories list. OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT memories evolve with each interaction and aren’t limited to specific conversations. Even if you delete a chat, the memories associated with it won’t be erased, and vice versa.
ChatGPT Memory works alongside Custom Instructions, another AI feature. Custom Instructions enable you to tell the chatbot anything you want it to take into account when responding. These personalized instructions, combined with memories, assist the artificial intelligence in forming a profile of you. As a result, ChatGPT can provide more accurate and tailored responses.
ChatGPT Memories and Their Effect on User Privacy
Concerns have arisen with the introduction of memories, as some speculate about potential violations of user privacy by ChatGPT Memory. In response, OpenAI has implemented measures to prevent the retention of sensitive information, thus averting any potential issues or leaks.
OpenAI addressed these concerns by stating,
“Memory carries additional privacy and security considerations, such as what type of information should be remembered and how it is used.”
“We are taking steps to assess and mitigate bias and prevent ChatGPT from proactively remembering sensitive information, such as your health details, unless you explicitly request it.”
The company emphasized its commitment to evaluating and mitigating bias, ensuring that ChatGPT refrains from proactively storing sensitive details, such as health information, unless explicitly instructed to do so.
It’s important to note that memories are distinct from chat history, necessitating individual deletion. OpenAI clarified that ChatGPT Memory remains operational until disabled or memories are cleared. Furthermore, if a user deletes their account, all associated memories will be erased, although they may have been utilized in training OpenAI models.
For users seeking conversations without memory retention, temporary chats offer a solution. These temporary chats can be initiated from the same menu used to switch language models, located in the upper left corner.
However, it’s worth mentioning that ChatGPT Memory is currently unavailable in Spain. OpenAI has confirmed that users within the European Union and South Korea will not have access to this feature.
