Apple Falls Behind in the AI Race

Throughout 2023, Apple’s lack of involvement in the AI discussions has resulted in a delay, with the tech giant’s initial generative AI release anticipated only by mid-2024. Internal challenges in creating a product akin to ChatGPT even resulted in the termination of other projects, enabling the company to concentrate on generative AI.

A Strategic Partnership to Avoid Pitfalls

A successful negotiation between Apple and Google or OpenAI could wield a substantial influence in the artificial intelligence domain. It’s worth noting that by teaming up with Google or OpenAI, Apple might sidestep some of the challenges faced by ChatGPT and Gemini during the launch of their AI chatbots. For instance, Gemini’s AI image generator persistently struggles to create images of people, despite Google discontinuing this feature several months ago.

A Risk of Increased Dependence on a Competitor

Nevertheless, Apple might face heightened reliance on a competitor by outsourcing its AI requirements to Google or OpenAI. A partnership between Apple and OpenAI would notably bolster the startup’s standing in the AI sector, potentially elevating OpenAI to a prominent position.

New Generative AI Features for iPhone

According to Bloomberg’s report, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), due in about six weeks, will see the presentation of a range of new generative AI features for its iPhone models. In addition to these internal developments, Apple is therefore in discussions with Google and OpenAI to power the generative AI functionalities of the iPhone.

A Very Important Decision for Apple

Despite Apple’s internal challenges in keeping up with its rivals in the AI field, the company has not yet made a definitive decision on which partner to select. This decision will play a crucial role in shaping Apple’s path in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence. This report thus underscores the hurdles Apple faces in catching up in the race for generative AI.

That said, it’s worth mentioning that teaming up with a well-established firm like Google or OpenAI could expedite its foray into this promising market. However, such a choice also entails the risk of relying on a competitor. Apple’s ultimate decision will undoubtedly have a substantial impact on its position in the AI sector and on the user experience of its forthcoming products.
