After months of rumors and speculation, OpenAI has unveiled its AI-powered search engine to compete with Google. SearchGPT is designed to answer queries quickly and efficiently. It pulls information from the web and presents it in a format similar to ChatGPT.

SearchGPT is still in the early stages of development. OpenAI has announced that it will provide this temporary prototype to a small group of users to gather feedback. Importantly, the search engine will eventually be integrated directly into ChatGPT.

“We’re testing SearchGPT, a prototype of new search features designed to combine the power of our AI models with information from around the web to give you fast, timely answers with clear, relevant sources,”

OpenAI said.

“We believe that by enhancing the conversational capabilities of our models with real-time information from around the web, finding what you’re looking for can be faster and easier.”

It’s well-known that today’s search engines, especially Google, are flawed. Google has significantly impacted the concept by integrating paid search results and altering the original format. Now, users often have to sift through a lot of irrelevant content to find the information they need.

OpenAI seeks to redefine the search engine experience by leveraging the popularity of its chatbot. SearchGPT features a straightforward interface with a dialog box for typing queries and a submit button. The results are displayed in an easy-to-read format, and users can perform follow-up searches to get more information.

According to OpenAI, SearchGPT will provide quick and direct answers with up-to-date information from across the web. The company is collaborating with publishers and creators to shape the user experience. To prevent lawsuits and accusations of plagiarism, all answers will include links and attributions with the source’s name. This ensures that users can trace the origins of the information.

OpenAI has confirmed that SearchGPT is available to a limited number of people. Based on the images, the AI-powered search engine prototype appears to be a desktop app for macOS. This app is temporary, as the search functions will eventually be integrated directly into ChatGPT.

Those interested in trying out SearchGPT can sign up for a waiting list. OpenAI has not yet announced a launch date.
