Meta Updates AI Glasses to Hear Better and Play Music From What You See

Meta has released a software update that adds two practical features to its AI smart glasses. The first helps wearers hear a nearby speaker more clearly in noisy places. The second one has the capability to play a song that fits what the wearer is viewing. The update is initially being launched in the Early Access Program of Meta and then to a larger group of people.

Conversation Focus Mode

The new listening feature is called conversation focus. It uses the glasses open ear speakers to amplify a single voice. The system applies audio processing to reduce background noise and lift the voice that is in your view. The amplification level can be adjusted by swiping the right temple or through the phone device settings. This allows you to adjust the effect to a cafe, a train, or a street.

Meta first announced this idea at its Connect conference earlier in the year. The company says the goal is to help with short-term listening needs. The feature is not a medical hearing aid. It is an assistive listening tool for everyday conversations. Meta compared the idea to existing features on other devices that help with speech clarity. The company also says that its AI runs some of the audio processing on the device to keep latency low.

Conversation focus will be available on Ray Ban Meta and Oakley Meta HSTN models in the United States and Canada at launch. Meta will expand the feature to more regions later. The company asks people to test the feature and offer feedback through the Early Access Program waitlist.

Visual Music Match

The second feature ties vision to music. The glasses can detect an object in view and offer a matching song through Spotify. Look at an album cover, and the glasses can cue a track by that artist. Look at a stack of holiday boxes, and the glasses can offer a seasonal playlist.

This feature is language-dependent at launch. Meta has been providing the Spotify match in English to several countries. It includes the list of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The feature uses visual recognition to suggest a song. Meta says the system links to the song on Spotify so that creators are credited.

How it Works and What to Expect

Both features arrive as a software release named version 21. The conversation focus uses the glasses microphones and beam forming to isolate speech. The visual music match uses an on-device camera and image models to find context. Meta has placed limits on what the system stores. Visual snapshots are not retained long-term unless the user saves them. Audio processing is temporary and focused on the live conversation. Meta also offers privacy controls in the device app. You can turn off either feature at any time.

The company plans a staged rollout. The Early Access Program requires joining a waitlist. Approved participants will get the update first. Wider availability will follow based on feedback and testing.
