Amazon declared a significant downsizing of its staff. The company will eliminate 14,000 jobs in corporate and administrative staff. The move is meant to reduce layers, speed decisions, and shift investment toward artificial intelligence.
The cuts affect a variety of corporate functions. The company said it will give the most affected employees 90 days to apply for internal roles. The company will also provide severance pay and career support for employees who cannot move to other positions.

Why the cuts
Amazon also positioned the change as a restructuring to operate at a quicker pace and to support its AI approach. According to the company, new generative AI tools and internal automation will transform the manner in which work is performed. Executive messages to staff explained that some roles will be reduced while hiring will continue in areas tied to infrastructure and AI.
Leaders cited a need to flatten layers and to give teams more ownership. The company pointed to large recent investments in cloud infrastructure and compute capacity. That spending underpins Amazon Web Services and the company plans that rely on large-scale compute for AI services.
What comes next
Internal job search and transition support will be available to affected employees. Amazon reported that recruiters will focus on internal moves among the applicants within the 90-day window. Separation package will also be provided to the staff eligible in the company, as well as outplacement.
Amazon anticipates continued employment in areas of priority as it cuts the number of corporate employees. It claimed that the firm will remain invested in data centers and AI compute. The management packaged the move as a change of resources and not a complete withdrawal of growth.

The tech sector is on a broader swath of restructuring their corporations. A significant number of firms are restructuring to address AI and cloud infrastructure and look to achieve efficiency through automation. Amazon explained these changes as it was required to be competitive and be able to move faster on the new technology opportunities.
