Anthropic has added a new voice mode to its Claude mobile chatbot apps. This feature lets you speak to Claude and hear Claude’s replies as spoken words instead of typing or reading text. The full rollout in English will happen over the next few weeks.
How voice mode works
Voice mode uses the Claude Sonnet 4 model by default. When you open voice mode, you tap a button to speak your question. Claude then replies out loud and shows the main points on screen as it speaks. After the chat, you can see a transcript and a summary of what was said. You can switch from text to voice and back at any time.
What you can do in voice mode
You can ask Claude about documents and images in a more natural way with your voice. You can also choose from five different voices for Claude to speak in. Free users can hold around twenty to thirty voice chats before hitting the normal usage limit. Paid Claude members get extra tools. They can connect voice mode to their Google Calendar and Gmail. Enterprise plans add Google Docs access, too.
Why voice mode changes interactions
Voice mode makes it easier to use Claude while your hands are busy. You can cook or drive and still ask questions and get answers by ear. Seeing key points on screen helps you follow along. Transcripts let you save and review important chats later. This new way to talk with Claude feels more like a natural conversation and less like a chat window.
The story behind the feature
Anthropic’s chief product officer, Mike Krieger, said the company was planning to add voice early this year. Anthropic explored partnerships with Amazon and voice specialist ElevenLabs for cutting-edge audio work. It is not clear if any outside team helped build the current version. Anthropic did work on this feature in-house with its own team of engineers and voice designers.
Voice mode puts Anthropic in line with other AI services that let you speak to your bot. OpenAI offers voice chat in its apps. Google has Gemini Live. xAI has a voice option for Grok. Anthropic now provides a similar option for Claude users. The arrival of voice mode marks a step forward in making AI more helpful in everyday life. Whether you want a hands-free chat while you cook or a quick reply on your commute, Claude can listen and respond just like a person in the room.
