Mozilla is testing a way for Firefox users to get answers from Perplexity AI right in the address bar. In version 139, a pop-up invites people to ask questions and see well-cited replies without leaving the browser. This trial shows Mozilla seeking new search partners beyond Google and aiming for an AI-powered experience that respects user privacy.

AI Search in the Address Bar
Mozilla has added an experiment in Firefox version 139 that pops up in Search Mode. The message says “Introducing Perplexity a new way to search in Firefox Ask Questions Get complete well cited answers Try Perplexity or Dismiss”. When users click Try Perplexity they can enter questions and see AI-generated responses with links to sources. This feature aims to cut down the time spent clicking through links by giving direct answers.
Why Mozilla Chooses Perplexity
Perplexity uses large language models to scan many web pages and pull together a clear answer. Subsequently, it provides citations to let users check the real sources. Unlike search engines that list multiple blue links, here the user only has to glance at the results. Looking at Perplexity Mozilla might discover means to integrate AI support into the browser without slowing it down or sharing private data.
Privacy and Control
Mozilla says it will respect privacy settings and not send data without permission. All AI requests will follow the same privacy rules as normal searches. Users can dismiss the pop-up and stick with their default search engine. This approach lets people try AI search without losing control of their data.
Looking Beyond Google
Firefox has long partnered with Google for search revenue. That deal brings in over four hundred million dollars a year. By trialing Perplexity Mozilla shows it wants to explore new options and revenue streams. If Perplexity proves popular Mozilla might add it permanently to the list of choices users see when they search.

A New Way to Search
This test could change how people search online by blending AI answers with browser search. It also highlights a shift toward more conversational and direct results. As Firefox rolls out version 139 more users will see the pop-up and decide if AI-backed search fits their needs. Mozilla’s trial will guide whether Perplexity stays or if other AI services may follow.
