Airbnb is testing an AI chatbot to handle customer questions in the United States. CEO Brian Chesky said half of Airbnb’s US users already use the bot, which answers common questions about bookings, refunds, and reservations. The company plans to make the bot available to all US users by the end of May.
Chesky shared that AI has reduced the need for human customer service agents by 15%. This means fewer people are waiting on hold to talk to a real person.
How the AI Bot Helps Users
The AI bot can handle simple tasks quickly. For example

- Answering FAQs: Questions like “What’s the Wi-Fi password?” or “When is check-out?” get instant replies.
- Processing refunds: The bot can start a refund request if your host cancels at the last minute.
The all-day operation of the bot, combined with its ability to communicate in several languages, enables easier access to travellers worldwide.
Hosts and Guests Have Mixed Feelings
Some hosts love the bot because it saves time. One host said, “I used to answer the same questions every day. Now the bot handles it.”
But others worry the bot feels impersonal. A guest complained, “The bot kept giving me generic answers when my AC broke. I had to demand a human to fix it.”
Airbnb says the bot will pass complex issues to real agents. The company is also using feedback to improve the AI’s responses.
