Nvidia’s Big GPU Claim: Why “Double Shipments” Isn’t Great News

Nvidia released its RTX 50-series GPUs while surpassing existing RTX 40-series GPU sales by a quantity double the original amount. This sounds like great news, right? This major announcement shows less thrill when examined more closely. Here is why.

What Nvidia Is Saying

During an interview at a technology event, Justin Walker from Nvidia informed journalists that the company sent twice as many RTX 50 graphics cards through distribution as its RTX 40 counterparts sold during their first five-week availability period. According to the information presented, the demand for new GeForce GPUs and their production numbers are growing. The numbers contain a secret mathematical method.

The Big Difference Between 2022 and 2025

Back in 2022, Nvidia only released one high-end GPU (the RTX 4090) in the first five weeks. Five weeks later, they released another expensive model (the RTX 4080). That means gamers could only buy two types of GPUs during those first five weeks, both very pricey.

In 2025, Nvidia did things differently. They released four  GPUs in the same five-week period. The NVIDIA GT 1030 served as the first entry during its product line until the premium GT 1030 model arrived before the GT 1050 Ti and GT 1050 joined the budget range. NVIDIA’s model release strategy provides the company with more opportunities to distribute GPUs into the market, even if newer GPU models demonstrate less competitive performance.

Why This Is Misleading

Imagine you sell lemonade. Last year, you only sold one flavor (regular lemonade) for five weeks. This year, you sell four flavors (regular, strawberry, mango, and peach) simultaneously. The truth emerges from stating that your lemonade sales doubled this year, although you actually distributed more flavors rather than increasing individual flavor sales.

That’s what Nvidia is doing. By releasing more GPU models faster, they can say they shipped “twice as many” units. But this does not mean they fixed problems like high prices or low stock. Gamers are still struggling to find RTX 50 GPUs in stores, and many are sold out or priced too high.

Gamers Are Frustrated

Many gamers want to upgrade their PCs with the new RTX 50 GPUs but face the same old issues. Scalpers (people who buy GPUs just to resell them at higher prices) are snatching up cards, making it hard to find them at fair prices. RTX 5090 sells on the market for higher prices than the $1,599 manufacturer price.

The RTX 5070 establishes its initial price at $599 but exists out of reach for numerous gamers due to its cost. The Radeon line produced by AMD gives users comparable performance at more affordable rates compared to other graphics processors.

What This Means for You

If you are saving up for a new graphics card, here’s what to know. Nvidia’s RTX 50 GPUs are powerful, but they might not be worth the hassle right now. Prices are high, and stock is limited. Experts say waiting a few months could help. New GPU models will enter the market around late 2025, which could cause a drop in retail costs.

Observing Best Buy and Newegg marketplace listings will help you during this period. Certain stores complement GPU purchases with complementary products such as free video games. You can also sign up for restock alerts to grab a card before scalpers do.

Nvidia’s claim about shipping twice as many GPUs sounds impressive, but mostly because they released more models faster. This does not solve the real problems for gamers: high prices and limited availability. Until Nvidia makes enough GPUs for everyone and keeps prices fair, many players will keep waiting or switch to other brands.
