This is not surprising, as the new tool will have the ability to interact with digital interfaces. While the company’s models have made significant progress in processing text and images, they have struggled with handling real-world scenarios. This is exactly where OpenAI plans to focus with its new agent.
Internally, it is called “Operator,” and its goal is to interact with computers and perform a wide range of tasks. This AI tool will go beyond simply answering questions or analyzing images; it will be able to handle interfaces and carry out entire processes. In other words, it will function as a sort of independent operating system.
According to the source, OpenAI is preparing to launch a preliminary version for researchers, with a later release for developers. The first steps of Operator—though the name may change—are expected to be seen by January 2025, allowing us to discover its true capabilities.
Unfortunately, it seems that end-user access is still a long way off. While the tool is extremely interesting, its use and learning curve may be too complex for average users—at least until a final, commercial version is released.
