As a daring action to fight misinformation before the US elections, TikTok has permanently removed several accounts associated with Russia’s state media outlets, which include Sputnik and RT, through its US Elections Integrity Hub initiative. The social media platform took down the accounts due to “covert influence operations” that went against its rules on spam and misleading conduct. The eliminated accounts were associated with Rossiya Segodnya and TV-Novosti, each of which controls one of Russia’s primary state media channels. Under TikTok’s state-affiliated media policy, these accounts were earlier restricted in both the European Union and the UK, but they are now banned globally as a whole.
This decision forms part of a bigger push against disinformation campaigns that seek to influence public thinking prior to the upcoming US presidential election. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence, together with the FBI, has reported that Russia is behind most AI-generated content concerning the 2024 election, usually targeting the Vice President and the Democratic Party.

TikTok indicated that the prohibited accounts were participating in secretive operations designed to mislead the users. Though the company did not share specific examples of the content, it reaffirmed that the videos were not found in users’ For You feeds and were correctly labeled under its state-affiliated media policy. In response, Sputnik published a statement on X, claiming that ” TikTok users and [its] 86,000 subscribers are no longer allowed to know the truth about urgent geopolitical issues.”
After recent US government sanctions against Rossiya Segodnya and TV-Novosti for allegedly exceeding their roles as media, a crackdown has ensued. The US government claims that these organizations shelter cyber-operational teams with connections to Russian intelligence, managing global efforts in influence and intelligence. The agencies at the federal level state that these teams have hired social media influencers to share unbranded content, with the goal of influencing elections internationally.
Misinformation through AI-Generated Content
The threat analysis report from Microsoft shows that Russia has turned to AI-generated content to persuade voters. Examples include simulated videos that claim Vice President Kamala Harris assaulted Trump supporters and yet another video falsely accusing her of involvement in a 2011 hit-and-run accident. Videos include New York City billboards that are counterfeit, wrongly claiming that Harris supports the notion of modifying children’s gender identities.
