The update is rolling out through OpenAI release notes and is already appearing in hands on reports. The new tools make Atlas more than a novelty. They bring familiar browser habits into an experience that also offers AI assisted answers and actions. Users who want a blend of traditional search and conversational AI will find this update helpful.

Tab Groups Added

Tab groups let users collect related pages together under one label. This helps keep a research project or shopping comparison tidy. Users can create a group for travel planning a work project or a single long term topic. Grouping tabs reduces visual clutter and speeds up returning to a task later. The Atlas update brings a vertical tab layout option and drag and drop support for easier organisation.

For people who open many tabs the groups feature cuts the time spent scanning tab titles. It also works well with Atlas memories and project context. When the AI can see the tabs that belong to the same project it can offer more focused summaries and next steps. That is useful when a session spans many sites and varied sources.

Smart Search Mode

Atlas now includes an auto mode that decides whether a query is best handled by ChatGPT or by a traditional search result list. Simple conversational questions will get a direct answer from ChatGPT. Queries that need multiple sources or deeper research will automatically present a set of search results. This eliminates the act of the user having to either select an AI-provided answer or a search engine every time he or she enters a query.

The idea is to combine the best in both modes with the auto mode. When the browser detects that a short answer is appropriate it returns an AI reply that may include links. When the topic requires broader sourcing Atlas shows search results in a clear vertical layout so users can inspect original pages. That design respects the need for both fast answers and verifiable sources.

Page Saving Improved

Saved pages are no longer a single crowded list. Atlas lets users organise saved pages into folders or categories. That change makes it faster to find a research article a how to guide or a product page later on. Students and writers who save many resources will find the organised view useful for long term projects. The save feature also links with Atlas memories so that context from saved pages can inform later chats.

Better page saving pairs well with tab groups. Users can group tabs for a single project and then move chosen pages into a dedicated collection. Over time that creates a compact repository of references that ChatGPT can draw on for summaries outlines or citations. For people who build reports or content the workflow reduces repeated searching.

Device Support and Roadmap

OpenAI has signalled plans to expand Atlas beyond its current platforms. A Windows build is in development and a mobile version for phones is planned. That expansion aims to keep projects and context synced across devices so users can move from desktop to phone without losing work. The rollout timing will vary by region and by access level.

The Atlas experience will continue to evolve. OpenAI is balancing privacy controls memory options and the depth of AI assistance. The release notes show ongoing adjustments to search result presentation import tools and data controls. The users should anticipate the recurrent updates, which will improve the relevancy speed and ease of use.
