Larian Studios has changed its approach to generative AI for its upcoming game Divinity. CEO Swen Vincke told fans that the studio will not use generative AI to produce concept art for the game. The statement came during a public question and answer session where Vincke aimed to clear up confusion about prior comments on AI use.

The studio had previously explained that AI was only part of early idea exploration and not used to create final assets. That explanation caused debate among fans and artists. Vincke said the clarification created doubt, and so the studio chose to stop using generative AI in the concept art phase.

No GenAI Art

Vincke said there will be no generative AI art in the Divinity concept work. He also said that the studio will avoid creating any debate over the origin of art. He explained that the team still studies new tools for other tasks, but wanted to be clear about concept art. The statement was meant to reassure artists and players about the origin of creative assets.

Lead writers and creative directors at Larian have added that text and story content will not come from generative AI. The studio said it will not ship creative assets unless it can be sure about training data origins and about consent from original creators. Vincke noted that any model that might create final art would be trained on data the studio owns.

Concept Art Policy

The new policy means concept artists will rely on traditional tools and human-driven workflows for the visual start of the project. The studio keeps testing generative tools in other departments for tasks where speed and iteration matter. Vincke said the studio hopes that controlled use of tools might help with iteration speed while keeping final assets human-made.

What the change means for the studio and for artists is simple and direct. Core concept art will have human authorship. Other teams may still use experimental tools under strict rules. The studio also said that any use of a generative tool to create final game content would only occur on models trained on proprietary data owned by Larian.
