An Indiana couple says they fell ill after eating delivered fast food. The family found a red mark on the bag. They were looking at their doorbell cameras and noticed a delivery worker, who seemed to spray the bag. Officials have arrested a woman in connection with the case. Local police report that they gathered video and other forms of evidence and then got a warrant to arrest.

What Happened Next

On December 7, a man in Evansville contacted the police to report that he and his wife fell ill after consuming some of the food that had been delivered. They reported that they had a burning sensation in the throat and stomach and vomited. The couple contacted the police, claiming to have found a presence of red marks in the exterior of the bag.

The couple checked their doorbell camera. The footage shows the delivery person place the order at the door. The person then took a small aerosol can from a keychain and sprayed toward the bag. The delivery person then took the usual photo to confirm the drop off and left. The sheriff office reviewed DoorDash records to link the order to the driver.

Detectives located the driver as a woman who was living in Kentucky. She spoke with the police by phone when first contacted. Authorities say she told investigators she used pepper spray to address a spider. The sheriff office notes that outdoor spiders are not active in the cold weather at the time of the delivery. The driver declined an in-person interview. A warrant followed. Police charged the woman with consumer product tampering and battery, resulting in moderate injury. She is awaiting extradition to Indiana.

DoorDash has removed the driver from the app. One of the company spokesmen informed the reporters that the site does not tolerate any kind of actions that may hurt customers. DoorDash claimed that it is collaborating with investigators.

Charges and Response

Local prosecutors listed two key counts. One count addresses tampering with a consumer product. The other count concerns a battery that caused a moderate injury. The charges are serious. Prosecutors can pursue felony charges when the conduct puts others at risk. The exact legal labels and potential penalties will follow state law and the prosecutor office decision.

Public agencies normally move carefully in such cases. Police must gather evidence to show what was applied to the food and who caused the harm. That work can include testing samples, reviewing video, collecting witness statements, and tracking delivery logs. News reporting shows police used the delivery platform records to tie the order to the driver and to build probable cause for the arrest.

DoorDash said it banned the driver and offered to help law enforcement. The company statement made clear that the platform will remove anyone who is accused of harming a customer. At the same time, DoorDash noted that the firm is supporting the local investigation and sharing the requested records with police.

What is known at this stage comes from law enforcement and local reporting. The case may include additional evidence such as lab tests. The driver is entitled to legal counsel and to due process. The accusations do not mean guilt. The decision will depend on the evidence presented by the prosecutors in courts. This is being followed by the local and national reporting.
