OpenAI has paused a set of in app suggestions after a wave of user complaints. The company said the items were meant to highlight apps built on the ChatGPT platform. Some users saw those suggestions as promotional messages. That reaction prompted a quick response from OpenAI leadership.

What OpenAI Did

OpenAI’s chief research officer acknowledged that the company “fell short” and said the feature was turned off while the team fixes precision and user controls. The message from leadership said the suggestions had no paid or financial element during tests.

OpenAI’s head of ChatGPT also posted that there were no live tests for ads in the product. The executive asked for patience and said the company would be careful if it ever pursued advertising in the future. Those remarks aimed to calm users who felt surprised and upset by the on screen prompts.

Why Users Reacted

Many paying ChatGPT customers saw the app suggestions while using the service. Some of the suggested items referenced well known retailers. That made users feel like they were viewing an ad inside a product they pay for. The complaints spread fast on social networks and created visible user anger.

OpenAI’s leadership said the company is listening. The firm turned off the suggestion type that looked like an ad. The move was framed as a temporary pause to refine how the system suggests apps and to build controls that let users choose what they see.

What Comes Next

OpenAI said it will improve the model’s precision so the suggestions feel helpful and not promotional. The company will also explore controls that let users dial suggestions down or turn them off completely. That will give users direct choice over whether to see such prompts. The episode also highlights a larger tension. OpenAI is exploring ways to grow revenue. The firm has hired executives expected to help build products that could later include monetization. At the same time the company has placed urgent emphasis on product quality. That balancing act will shape future experiments in the app.
