Traffic Trends Now
The foundation found that some of the high traffic seen in May and June was not people at all. Those visits came from bots that were designed to evade detection. Wikipedia updated its bot filters, and the adjusted totals revealed the fall in human visits. The group said the new numbers matter because they reflect real reading by actual people.
Why It Fell
Wikipedia points to two broad changes in how people look for facts. First, search engines increasingly show AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. Those summaries often pull facts from Wikipedia and present answers directly on the search page. Second, younger users are turning to short social video platforms to learn quick facts instead of visiting long articles. Both trends reduce the number of clicks that reach Wikipedia pages.
Researchers and industry studies back up parts of this picture. Some reports find that AI overviews cut click rates for links in search results. Other studies show that when AI summaries appear, searchers click on links less often than they did in the past. Not every study sees the same scale of impact, and platform operators sometimes dispute the findings. The mix of results means the effect varies by query type and by platform.
What Wikipedia Says
Wikipedia does not reject new ways to spread knowledge. The foundation said it welcomes tools that help people learn. At the same time, it warned about risks. Fewer page visits could mean fewer active volunteer editors and less donation income. That outcome could weaken the quality and reach of free knowledge over time. The foundation said companies that use Wikipedia content must encourage people to visit the original site and to support the community behind it.
Affect on Editors and Readers
Wikipedia is a volunteer-based site. A good deal of sourcing and checking that contributes to the trust of the site is done by those volunteers. According to Bloomberg, new volunteers can be more difficult to recruit in case visit counts remain low. The foundation explained that it is building new work on attribution and on efforts to reach readers in new places. It said it will also ask platforms to link back to the encyclopedia so readers can check sources and learn more.
