Snapchat now caps free Memories at 5 gigabytes. This limit applies to the Memories area, where people save photos and videos. Snapchat is offering paid plans for people who need more space. The company will hold extra Memories for one year before removing content that exceeds the free limit. These steps are part of a wider move to manage growing storage costs and keep the service running.
What the plans include
Snapchat offers an entry-level Memories plan with 100 gigabytes. Snapchat Plus subscribers get larger storage as part of their paid tier. A top tier plan called Snapchat Platinum includes several terabytes for people who save a lot of content. Pricing and exact plan names may vary by region and are shown in the app when users choose to upgrade.
How to backup your Memories
Open Snapchat and tap the Memories icon next to the camera. Tap Select in the top right and pick up to one hundred Snaps at a time to export to your phone. Select the files and Tap Export, and then download them to your device. Keep on doing this until you have saved what you want. It is the quickest means of saving the Snaps that matter the most.
Use the Download My Data tool
Snapchat has a Download My Data feature, which, in case you prefer a single archive file, allows you to do it. Go to the app Open Settings. Scroll to My Data and go through the process to request a complete export. Select Memories and select All Time as your range in case you want all of it. When the archive is available, Snapchat will send an email with a link to a zip file. Large accounts may take the process longer.
Decide what to keep
In case you have thousands of Memories, then select what is important to you first. The first ones are export highlights and events. Snapchat: Store images of individuals you desire to memorise and any video that you may wish to edit in the future. Back up copies to your phone and to a cloud-based service that you can control. This provides you with 2 back-ups and less exposure to file loss.
What happens if you do nothing
Snapchat will keep overlimit Memories for a temporary period. Once that window has been exceeded, the service will delete data that will otherwise take you beyond the free 5-gigabyte mark. In an instance where you cancel a paid plan, with you still exceeding the free limit, it can take you only a few hours to resubscribe or export files before they are deleted. Check the Memories settings to verify the timelines and notices.
