Snapchat Now Cuts Free Memories to 5GB and Adds Paid Tiers

Snapchat has changed how it stores user Memories. The company now limits free Memories to five gigabytes per account. Users who want more space must choose a paid plan. Snapchat will keep excess Memories for a year as a temporary safety net. After that, older snaps may be removed if no paid plan is chosen. The change aims to manage rising storage costs and to fund further work on Memories features, the company said in an announcement and in media coverage.

Memory storage change

Snapchat first launched Memories as a core feature nearly a decade ago. The tool lets users save photos and short videos in the app rather than in device storage. Snap now says users have saved more than one trillion Memories since launch. That growth pushed infrastructure needs far beyond original expectations. To address costs, Snap now gives every account five gigabytes of free storage.

Users who store more than five gigabytes must subscribe to a storage plan to keep all of their saved snaps. Snap will hold excess Memories for twelve months as a temporary buffer while users decide. After the grace period, older Memories that exceed the free limit may be deleted unless a paid plan is active. The company also notes that users can download Memories to their own devices at any time to preserve them outside the app.

Plan details explained

Snapchat offers a range of paid options. The introductory plan provides up to one hundred gigabytes for a small monthly fee. Snapchat Plus members receive more storage as part of that subscription tier. The highest tier, Snapchat Platinum, includes multiple terabytes of storage. Pricing varies by plan and by region. Snapchat says most accounts will be unaffected because most users keep less than five gigabytes of Memories. The plans are meant to help heavy users and creators who keep large archives of snaps. Snap also said it will roll out tools to help users manage storage and to download content easily.

Snap explained the new approach as a business and technical decision. Storing one trillion items requires major infrastructure investment. The company said the change will let it continue to improve Memories features for everyone. Snapchat will also provide guidance and in-app prompts to help people check their usage and choose a plan if they need one.

What users must know

First, check how much memory storage your account uses. Open Memories in the app and view settings to see usage. Second, consider whether you want to keep everything in Snapchat or download older snaps to local storage. Third, if you use Memories for work or as an archive, review the paid tiers to find the right fit. Fourth, note the twelve-month temporary storage period for content over five gigabytes. That time is meant to give users a chance to subscribe or to download their files. Fifth, if you do not choose a plan and you exceed five gigabytes, your oldest snaps may be removed after the temporary period.

Snap also said it will delete only the most recent snaps that push an account over the limit unless a plan is active. That policy aims to keep a user’s oldest and often most meaningful content safe during the transition period. Users who prefer to retain control can always export their Memories to a personal device or cloud account before the grace period ends.

Why this matters

Free cloud storage has become a common line item in social apps and in consumer services. As user bases grow and as features add photos and video at higher quality, storage demands rise quickly. For Snapchat, the massive number of saved Memories created real costs. This move shifts some of those costs to users who store the heaviest archives. The change also changes how people think about Snapchat as a place to save long-term content. For many casual users, the five-gigabyte limit will be plenty. For power users, the release of a clear paid option makes it possible to keep everything without shifting data off the platform.

Snap’s announcement has prompted discussion online about fairness, price, and the future of free features in major apps. Some users view the change as reasonable and expected. Others see it as a hard choice for people who have built multi-year archives inside one app. Snap says it will provide tools and reminders to help with the transition and that it will continue to invest in Memories features.
