OpenAI Introduces AI Hiring Tool and Certification Program

OpenAI said it is building an AI-powered hiring platform that will connect employers with job seekers. The company expects to open the platform to the public by mid-2026. This move places OpenAI in direct competition with established professional networks and job marketplaces.

The service is part of a broader push by OpenAI to expand beyond chat and developer tools. The company will offer a dedicated track for small businesses and local governments. OpenAI said the goal is to use AI to match skills to roles and to reduce friction in hiring.

Platform and partners

OpenAI said it will work with major employers on training and certification efforts. Walmart was named as a partner for the certification program. OpenAI aims to certify millions of workers in AI-related skills over the next five years.

The new jobs platform will combine AI matching with tools for employers to list roles and for candidates to showcase verified skills. OpenAI said it will build features that help smaller employers find local talent. The company also plans to provide tools for workforce reskilling.

OpenAI is not the only company moving into this space. Major tech firms have already added AI features to hiring products. The difference for OpenAI is that it intends to use its own models to handle matching and to sell certifications that prove AI fluency.

Certifications and goals

OpenAI said it will expand its OpenAI Academy and roll out certification tracks for different skill levels. The company plans a pilot of the certification program later in 2025. The stated ambition is to certify large numbers of Americans by 2030. Walmart will help design training for some of those certification tracks.

OpenAI said the certifications will aim to demonstrate practical fluency with AI tools. Employers may use those credentials to find candidates who can work with generative AI systems. OpenAI also framed the effort as part of a national push to raise AI literacy.

Why this matters

A new hiring marketplace from OpenAI could change how employers discover talent. OpenAI may use model-based matching to surface candidates who would otherwise be hard to find. The platform might also accelerate the training process by integrating training with tests and certifications.

The plan presents a sequence of questions of prejudice and impartiality. The artificial intelligence in the hiring process must be provided. OpenAI will be asked about candidate rankings, candidate privacy, and avoiding harm to the algorithm.  There will be a keen eye on the pilot and initial deployments made by regulators and employers.

OpenAI also enters a competitive field. LinkedIn already provides job matching and skills badges. Microsoft owns LinkedIn and is an investor in OpenAI. The new OpenAI Jobs Platform could overlap with Microsoft-backed services and with other third-party hiring tools that integrate AI. Market dynamics and partnerships will shape how quickly the new platform gains traction.

OpenAI said it will start pilot programs soon and will expand the service by mid-2026. The certification pilot will begin before the full platform launch. The company said it will work with employers and local groups to design practical training and to ensure that certified skills map to real job needs.
