Global tech giant Microsoft has made another significant investment in India’s growing IT landscape. The company purchased 16.4 acres (66,414.5 square meters) of prime land in Pune’s Hinjewadi area for Rs 5197 million, furthering its strategy to expand its data center operations in the country.
This investment aligns with Microsoft’s broader focus on strengthening its presence across India, particularly in the commercial real estate space, as it expands its network of data centers, development centers, and flexible workspaces. The land was acquired from Indo Global Infotech City LLP, with the deal officially registered in August 2024. According to registration documents reviewed by Square Yards, the transaction also incurred a stamp duty of Rs 311.8 million and a registration fee of Rs 30,000.
Recent Expansion Efforts
This isn’t Microsoft’s first real estate move in Pune. In 2022, the tech giant also acquired a 25-acre land plot in Pimpri-Chinchwad for Rs 3280 million. Additionally, in early 2024, Microsoft secured a 48-acre plot in Hyderabad for Rs 2670 million. These acquisitions are part of the company’s mission to strengthen its data center footprint across major Indian cities, with existing centers already operating in Pune, Mumbai, and Chennai.
Business Standard reports that Microsoft’s expansion is driven by the increasing demand for cloud computing and data storage, both critical components for the company’s services in the region. Pune’s Hinjewadi, being an established IT hub, fits perfectly into Microsoft’s long-term strategic vision for India.
Workforce & Skilling Initiatives
Currently, Microsoft India employs over 23,000 professionals across key cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune. These teams focus on various business functions, including sales, marketing, research and development, and customer support.
Furthering its commitment to India’s tech ecosystem, Microsoft launched the ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative in early 2024. This major skilling program aims to equip 2 million people with digital and AI-related skills by 2025, ensuring the Indian workforce is future-ready. As part of Microsoft’s global “Skills for Jobs” initiative, the program plays a critical role in preparing the next generation for the evolving digital landscape.
End Note
Microsoft’s latest Rs 5200 million investment in Pune adds to its growing real estate portfolio in India. As the company scales up its operations, particularly in the data center space, this land acquisition solidifies its position in one of India’s key technology hubs. With ongoing investments in infrastructure and workforce development, Microsoft is poised to play a major role in India’s digital future.
