Ukraine has introduced a new guided missile called Palianytsia, which is faster than propeller drones. A jet engine powers the Palianytsia instead of propellers, allowing it to fly much faster. Ukraine announced testing of the Palianytsia in January 2024. Images from that time show it has a larger wingspan and a canard tail.

On August 24, 2024, Ukraine successfully used the Palianytsia for the first time against a military target in Russian-occupied territory, according to the Ukrainian presidential office. Oleksandr Kamyshin, Ukraine’s Minister of Strategic Industries, and President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the attack.
According to available information, the Palianytsia has a cigar-shaped body about two meters long, with two winglets. Its wingspan is estimated at 1.5 meters, and it is equipped with a single rear engine featuring two recessed air intakes. The drone uses a small turbojet propulsion system.
Technical Specifications and Potential Applications
The Palianytsia’s design emphasizes low weight and high speed. The absence of visible attachment points on the wings or fuselage, along with a jettisonable landing gear, suggests that the warhead is likely housed internally. The drone is not designed for reuse.
To avoid enemy detection, the drone must fly below the radar horizon. It’s unclear how well a pilot can control the drone over long distances, such as avoiding high-voltage cables, elevated terrain, or buildings.
The name “Palianytsia” holds cultural significance, as it refers to a traditional Ukrainian bread. People often use its pronunciation as a linguistic test to identify non-native speakers.
