Netflix has been investing heavily in the gaming world for some time now. Although many subscribers do not view this as a major attraction, the platform has already seen impressive numbers thanks to the launch of titles like the GTA trilogy.

It seems the streaming giant is serious about the gaming industry, recently revealing that it has over 80 games in development and plans to release new games every month.

In his latest investor meeting, Netflix CEO Gregory K. Peters shared interesting updates about the company’s gaming division. According to Peters, interactive narrative games are “easier to build,” which is why the company has heavily invested in them. These titles are part of the Netflix Stories core, and the company plans to release a new title every month, based on popular franchises such as Emily in Paris and Selling Sunset.

Peters promises that Netflix “has a lot more to offer, including a variety of different types of games coming in the coming months and years.”

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also discussed the company’s gaming division:

“I think our opportunity here to serve the superfan with games is really fun and remarkable. I think the idea of being able to take a show and give the superfan a place to be in between seasons, and even beyond that, using the game platform to introduce new characters, stories, or plot twists, is exciting. These elements could then appear in the next season or a sequel movie.”

As you can see, Netflix wants to use games to expand its original stories, which could be an interesting approach, similar to the Marvel Extended Universe concept.

For now, Netflix is still focused on mobile games, but it seems it won’t be long before it competes with major publishers on PC and consoles.
