Microsoft’s New ARM Notebook Disappoints in Everyday Work

The Copilot+ PCs, which focus on ARM architecture, are still somewhat of a mystery regarding their features. Robert Triggs, a writer for Android Authority, tested one of these PCs—a new Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X1 Elite—for two days of productive work. His conclusion: “I’m already having concerns.”

Triggs highlights the emulation level and the AI aspect of the Copilot+ PCs as the main areas of criticism. It’s unclear when emulation works well through Microsoft Prism and which programs encounter various issues. For example, Adobe Lightroom Classic, which still requires emulation, works perfectly for editing images but the system stalls when exporting to JPEG format.

The Emulation Is Not Reliable

Popular apps like Discord and Asana can be frustrating on Copilot+ PCs. Some don’t run at all on the emulation level, while others stutter and crash temporarily. Many programs don’t run natively on ARM64 under Windows 11, such as LibreOffice, a popular free alternative to Microsoft Office. Almost all games on Steam require emulation, which affects performance. Additionally, many VPN clients are not natively supported and don’t work at all. “That can be an absolute deal-breaker for me,” writes Triggs.

Most of the AI functions don’t feel new to the author. Microsoft Copilot is also available on conventional computers without the AI label, and the AI functions in video conferencing tools are already handled by software on many clients. The NPU isn’t necessarily needed here, while Recall, the original primary feature, has been postponed until the end of 2024. For Triggs, the AI upscaling feature, which is rather hard to find, is one of the most interesting. The NPU can therefore get more FPS out of various games.

The biggest advantage of the new platform is the improved battery life of the Snapdragon X1 Elite compared to x86 notebooks. But that alone is not enough for the author to justify the sometimes-high prices for a new Copilot+ PC.
