While it’s common for people who use their cell phones a lot during the day to charge them overnight while they sleep, doing so can be risky. Apple has begun warning users about the dangers of charging their smartphones overnight. Nobody wants to wake up with an empty phone battery, but it’s important to exercise caution.

In a recent security advisory posted on its official website’s support page, Apple advises users to avoid charging their cell phones under pillows, blankets, or directly on their bodies whenever possible. According to Apple’s guidance, it’s best to keep your iPhone and its charger in an open area with good airflow, both during use and while charging. Those who tend to feel less heat should be especially cautious.

The reason behind this warning is simple: placing your smartphone under a pillow or wrapping it in a blanket can cause it to overheat because the device’s air vents are unable to properly cool the phone. The risks associated with overheating can be quite serious. For instance, last year, a user of the iPhone 15 Pro reported that the A17 chip overheated, causing their smartphone’s battery to swell.

Furthermore, Apple advises against using third-party adapters or cables that lack the MFi (Made For iPhone) certification. It’s recommended to use cables that carry this certification, support USB 2.0 or later, and comply with the regulatory standards of the user’s country, such as ANATEL.

While Apple’s warning specifically targets iPhones, the advice applies to all smartphones, regardless of brand. Therefore, it’s essential to exercise caution when charging your cell phone overnight.
