Huawei Shows Samsung How It’s Done: Old Phones Receive Huge Software Update

While Huawei regularly releases new smartphones that are currently enjoying increased popularity, they don’t forget about their older models. The Chinese company has surprisingly announced that extremely old phones will receive a brand-new software update. At the same time, Samsung is pulling the plug on their legendary smartphones.

Huawei Provides Old Smartphones with HarmonyOS 4 Software Update

While Samsung is currently correcting a mistake and confirming that there will be no Android 14 update for the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20 smartphones, Huawei has made a surprising announcement. Smartphones that were released in 2019, such as the Huawei P30 Pro, will receive a major software update to HarmonyOS 4.0 next year. In total, 12 old smartphones will be equipped with the new software:

  • Huawei P30
  • Huawei P30 Pro
  • Huawei Mate 20
  • Huawei Mate 20 Pro
  • Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design
  • Huawei Mate 20 X
  • Huawei Mate 20 X 5G
  • Huawei Nova 5 Pro
  • Honor 20
  • Honor 20 Pro
  • Honor V20
  • Honor Magic 2

However, this only applies to China (Source: HuaweiCentral). In Germany, Huawei does not offer HarmonyOS for its smartphones. Therefore, devices in this country will remain on the old system and cannot be used with the new operating system. Nevertheless, Huawei’s initiative is impressive and shows that old smartphones don’t need to be immediately discarded. Huawei significantly enhances the value of these old devices, as they are still functional in terms of hardware.

Huawei’s Focus on China with Smartphones

The US ban has significantly restricted Huawei in recent years and has led the company to primarily focus on China – at least when it comes to smartphones. For example, the Mate 60 Pro is equipped with its own Kirin processor and Chinese 5G modem once again. That was a real surprise. In Europe and Germany, Huawei primarily offers devices like smartwatches. Whether smartphones will be released again in the future remains to be seen. Success without Google services and apps will be very challenging.
