Elon Musk has been trying various methods to combat fake accounts on the “X” platform (formerly “Twitter”). In July, he temporarily restricted access to the platform’s content with the aim of protecting it from bots. However, this did not necessarily reduce the spread of bots; on the contrary, they have become more active on “X”, posing as other individuals and posting misleading content, and so on. To mitigate this problem, “X” is possibly working on ID verification.

App researcher Nima Ovji noticed hints that “X” is likely working on additional verification that would require users to upload an image of their government-issued identification document and a selfie. In early August, Ovji noticed the “ID verified” label on Musk’s profile, which has now been removed. Meanwhile, he has recently come across an announcement in the app that explains in detail how this ID verification works. This could mean that the launch of this feature is not far away. To launch this feature, “X” is collaborating with the third-party “identity verification” company “Au10tix”, as indicated in the description of this announcement.

It also states that only “X” and “Au10tix” will see the identification documents and selfies submitted for ID verification. This information will be stored for no longer than 30 days and will be used for “security and protection purposes,” including preventing the risk of someone else impersonating you.”
