Nintendo has done it again. Following the awe-inspiring Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which prioritized exploration above all, the Japanese gaming giant has returned with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This latest installment multiplies the fun by introducing entirely new abilities unprecedented in the franchise. One of these, ‘Ultraman,’ has led thousands of users to spend hours constructing tremendously original machines. Even engineers find themselves unable to resist these gameplay mechanics.

Education and Video Games: A Fusion
The education sector has long looked to video games for learning and sharing lessons. Now, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has inspired the University of Maryland in the United States to utilize Nintendo’s exclusive title for teaching engineering—an achievement made possible through the myriad possibilities offered by the Ultraman ability. Associate Professor Ryan D. Sochol expressed how this mechanic is even more appreciated when applied with established foundations: “As I played Tears of the Kingdom, I couldn’t believe how much it was leveraging my engineering knowledge,” states the professional in the university’s release.
The Birth of ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link to Machine Design’
This fall of 2023 marked the initiation of a course titled ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link to Machine Design,’ allowing students to explore different construction ideas within the Nintendo Switch game while emphasizing engineering lessons. For instance, the initiative led a group of students to assemble a robot capable of navigating both land and rivers. Sochol’s goal, however, isn’t solely about creating useful in-game devices: “Machines built for design projects aren’t very useful if you’re aiming to complete the title, but it allows us to teach engineering as it should be taught – as something engaging, challenging, thrilling, and fun.”
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Impressions
While we haven’t solely played the Nintendo Switch exclusive focusing on the opportunities it presents in the realm of engineering, we can’t help but agree with Sochol regarding the impact of this new program. If you’re eager to learn more about Link’s adventure through Hyrule, we recommend delving into our analysis of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, where we dissect every aspect of this epic journey.
