OpenAI has shut down its AI Classifier content detection tool because it was unable to differentiate between AI and human-written content. The AI Classifier was launched earlier this year in January 2023 with the aim of preserving the intellectual integrity of professors, scholars, and teachers worldwide. The tool’s objective was to distinguish between content written by humans and content generated by ChatGPT.

However, only half a year later, OpenAI has discontinued that tool, as it was unable to fulfill the objective it was designed for.

OpenAI Classifier Is No Longer Available

The creator of ChatGPT, OpenAI has very quietly closed down their AI detection tool due to “low accuracy,” said by the firm. The explanation did not come out with a new announcement; however, they added it to the blog post where the launch of the tool was first announced, “We are working to incorporate feedback and are currently researching more effective provenance techniques for text, and have made a commitment to develop and deploy mechanisms that enable users to understand if audio or visual content is AI-generated,”

New tools come online in abundance, claiming to differentiate between AI-generated content and human-written content. On their launch of AI Classifier, OpenAI asserted its significance in distinguishing between AI-written and human-written content. However, in their recent blog, they said “Our Classifier is not fully reliable” adding details to their announcement they further added “classifier correctly identifies 26% of AI-written text (true positives) as “likely AI-written,” while incorrectly labeling human-written text as AI-written 9% of the time (false positives).”

ChatGPT a Concern In Educational Sector

Since the launch of the ChatGPT, all education sectors have raised an alarm that students are using this new AI development to their advantage, creating and writing essays and research papers using OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The education sector has expressed deep concerns over the future implications of ChatGPT, as it can seriously affect the intellectual and innovative capabilities of the masses, who are not exercising their brains and finding easy solutions with no input of their own.

OpenAI also recently lost its trust and safety leader during a period when the Federal Trade Commission is conducting an investigation into OpenAI’s information and data vetting practices. OpenAI declined to provide any additional comments beyond what was mentioned in its blog post.
