Mark Zuckerberg’s company, “Meta,” held its annual “Connect” event on September 27th, introducing updates to their hardware and software. One of the most anticipated reveals was the “Meta” virtual reality (VR) glasses, the ” Meta Quest 3″ which had been the subject of speculation and rumours for some time. These glasses are seen as a significant leap forward not only in the “Quest” series but also in “Meta’s” vision for the future, catering to both gaming and metaverse experiences.

In the development of this new device, “Meta” has made substantial progress, although some parameters remain unchanged compared to last year’s “Quest Pro” glasses. However, compared to the “Quest 2,” a major step forward with the “Quest 3” is its offering of not only VR but also mixed reality experiences, allowing users to interact with the surrounding world and objects.

On the technical side, the “Quest 3” features the “Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2” processor and 8 GB of RAM, which, according to “Meta,” provides double the graphics performance compared to the “Quest 2.” Meanwhile, the device’s battery life per charge remains the same, ranging from 90 minutes to three hours, depending on the user’s activities. The “Quest 3” also incorporates 2064 x 2208 LCD displays, delivering a 30% higher resolution than the “Quest Pro.” It’s worth noting that the device offers a 15% larger field of view. However, unlike the “Quest Pro,” the “Quest 3” does not provide facial and eye tracking.

The most significant differences compared to previous “Quest” models are found in the cameras. The front of the “Quest 3” glasses features two new full-colour cameras, significantly enhancing the video viewing experience and providing a much sharper image. Additionally, the depth sensor can automatically map the user’s environment and detect nearby objects.

The “Quest 3” package includes “Touch Plus” controllers with improved sensitivity, and “Meta” has integrated AI and machine learning solutions, allowing for better prediction of user hand movements. The base 128 GB version of the “Meta Quest 3” is priced at $499.99 USD, while the 512 GB version costs $649.99 USD. The device will be available for purchase on October 10th.
