One of the less enjoyable aspects of buying a new smartphone, tablet, or computer is the need to update the entire device’s system right after the first use. After all, we’re usually eager to test the device, and having to do this update ends up delaying the process.Perhaps aiming to skip this step altogether, Apple has discovered a way to update iPhones while they are still in the store, inside their respective boxes.

In his newsletter for the international portal Bloomberg, Mark Gurman, chief correspondent for the portal, stated that Apple has developed a system that can update the embedded iOS version in iPhones before they are sold – and without the need to open the box.

According to Gurman, the device looks like a wireless charging pad, and it’s enough for Apple Store employees to place the sealed boxes of iPhones on the surface to transfer and install the update. The pad activates the iPhone without the need for wires, runs the software update, and turns off the device again.

Although the system currently only covers iPhones, it is quite conceivable that the idea could be extended to other products of the brand, such as computers, watches, and tablets.

According to the correspondent, this innovation is expected to reach the company’s stores by the end of 2023.
