Google is expected to announce the Pixel Watch 2, its new smartwatch, during the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launch event. While the manufacturer has confirmed its design in a video, many smartwatch details are still reserved for the official presentation, but they have leaked before the big tech could unveil the surprises.
On Tuesday (12), a new report from a source revealed the possible colour options that will be available for the Pixel Watch 2. Just like the first generation, there will be three frame options: black, silver, and gold. Each one will come with straps in shades that match the watch’s metallic side.
The Pixel Watch 2 is expected to be launched at an event scheduled for October 4th. In addition to the smartwatch, Google is likely to reveal all the specifications and prices of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, which had their first official images and videos released last week.
According to sources, the black-framed version will come with an Obsidian (black) strap. The gold model will have the same Hazel (grey) strap. The silver-framed version will be sold in two options: one with a “Bay” strap, which could be a shade of green or brown, and another with a Chalk/Porcelain (white) strap.
The leaker also revealed the alleged model numbers for the smartwatches:
- Pixel Watch 2 LTE and Wi-Fi (black, black strap): GA05025-GB and GA05029-GB
- Pixel Watch 2 LTE and Wi-Fi (gold, gray strap): GA05026-GB and GA05030-GB
- Pixel Watch 2 LTE and Wi-Fi (silver, white strap): GA05027-GB and GA05031-GB
- Pixel Watch 2 LTE and Wi-Fi (silver, “Bay” strap): GA05028-GB and GA05032-GB
Finally, the informant mentioned a possible increase in charging speed for the Pixel Watch 2. It’s worth noting that the current generation of the smartwatch has limited charging power of 5W, while competing models like the Galaxy Watch 5 support up to 10W charging.
Another “inherited” feature from the current generation is the strap-changing mechanism, which has become one of the watch’s most attractive features. The rear side features more noticeable changes, such as the thinner black edge of the metal area and inscriptions confirming some smartwatch specifications, including:
- IP68
- Water Resistance 50m (water resistance up to 50 meters deep)
- EDA (electrodermal activity tracking for stress detection)
- Heart Rate Sensor
- Sleep Tracking
- SpO2 (blood oxygen saturation sensor)
Instead of sensors arranged in a line, the components are now organized in a 3:3 grid, suggesting that changes in the smartwatch’s internal construction will also be made. Google has not confirmed other specifications of the model.
Speculation suggests that the Google Pixel Watch 2 will be equipped with the same 384 x 384 pixels OLED screen as its predecessor but will receive hardware improvements, including Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 platform. This processor is expected to work with 2GB of RAM and run Wear OS 4, Google’s new version of the operating system for watches.
The availability of the Pixel Watch 2 is still a mystery, but it’s worth noting that the first generation was only available in the United States, Canada, and selected countries in Europe and Asia, with a suggested price of $349.
