“If you get rid of TikTok, Facebook and Zuckerschmuck will double thier business,”
Trump emphasized on his distrust of Facebook due to alleged election interference. The legislation would require ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, to divest its US operations within a specific timeframe.
Trump’s current stance contradicts his previous actions, where he threatened to block TikTok in the US over espionage concerns. TikTok sued the Trump administration, arguing that the ban violated its rights.
Transition Post-Election
Following the 2020 US elections, Donald Trump shifted his focus away from TikTok towards claims of election fraud. This transition coincided with a decrease in Trump’s social media presence after the Capitol incident. While Biden’s administration didn’t reverse course on China, maintaining sanctions and blockades, Trump’s attention shifted away from TikTok-related issues, redirecting towards his post-election grievances.
Continued Conflict with China
Despite the change in administration from Trump to Biden, tensions between the US and China persist. Biden’s administration has maintained sanctions and blockades against China, and US legislators continue to view TikTok as a national security threat. Additionally, there have been ongoing discussions and proposed legislation targeting Chinese apps like TikTok, reflecting the broader geopolitical tensions between the two countries.
Recent Legislation
Recently, the House Energy and Commerce Committee voted on bills targeting TikTok and other Chinese apps. One bill restricts app stores from offering apps controlled by foreign adversaries, while another prohibits the sale of US citizens’ data to foreign governments.
Opportunistic Attack on Biden
Seeing an opportunity to criticize Joe Biden who supports the Bill, Donald Trump highlighted his support for legislation targeting TikTok. He directly attacked Biden and Facebook, using strong language to express his distrust and opposition. This attack came amidst ongoing tensions between the two parties and reflects Trump’s strategy of capitalizing on political disagreements to discredit his adversaries.
