Apple Used the Blackmagic Camera App to Film the Scary Fast Event on the iPhone

Apple surprised many people when they revealed that Monday’s Scary Fast event was entirely filmed on an iPhone – the iPhone 15 Pro Max, to be more precise. The 30-minute broadcast, which showcased Apple’s new M3 chips and the new Macs, was characteristically sleek, and the excellent image quality and impressive production values gave no hint that a $1,200 smartphone camera was doing all the work.

Certainly, Apple also deployed professional-level film production kits, such as drones, carts, cranes, and lighting – not to mention a highly skilled team – to give the footage that professional look before it was sent for editing… using a Mac, of course.

But instead of using the iPhone’s somewhat basic Camera app for the filming, the production team opted for the recently released Blackmagic Camera app by Blackmagic Design, known for its advanced cameras as well as its popular video editing software, DaVinci Resolve.

The powerful Blackmagic Camera app offers a range of professional-level features to help you get exactly the kind of shot you’re looking for, providing full control over things like frame rate, shutter speed, white balance, and ISO.

While shooting, you can view the histogram, focus peak, levels, frame guides, and more, but if you want a clear view of what’s in the frame, you can dismiss the data with a single tap.

With the Blackmagic Camera app, you can work in 16:9 or vertical ratios, but – and this is a neat little feature – it also allows you to record in 16:9 while holding the phone vertically, useful if, for example, you want to discreetly capture some shots.

In fact, the Blackmagic Camera app has so many features that many people may prefer to use the simpler iPhone Camera app for recording videos. However, for those seeking more professional features, it’s definitely worth taking a look.

And one of the best things about the software is that you can download it for free from the Apple App Store.
