Apple has filed a patent defining the creation of an “underwater user interface” for future iPhones. The novelty was found in the database of the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

According to information in the 78-page document, this interface will be activated whenever the iPhone is underwater to enable normal functionality.

“Currently, when the iPhone is submerged, iOS does not function correctly, and the user cannot even perform simple functions, such as opening an application.”

This new iOS interface would be significantly simplified, with navigation possible through touches on the physical buttons (volume, power, and action).

To some extent, Apple’s new underwater interface would resemble what Samsung offers in the “easy mode” of One UI. Consequently, users would see larger icons and texts on the iPhone.

Another important detail of the patent is that scrolling on the home screen would transition from horizontal to entirely vertical, operated using the volume buttons (up and down).

For now, it remains unclear if Apple intends to launch this interface with the iPhone 16 lineup. Nonetheless, Cupertino’s devices are water-resistant for up to 30 minutes, thanks to the IP68 certification, which Apple may leverage to attract more users.
