PC gamers are familiar with the excitement that arises when they hold a new piece of hardware. The ideal scenario involves directly installing the new component into the computer, sometimes leading to careless actions fueled by adrenaline. However, a Reddit user’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating the fatal consequences of such carelessness.

PC Gamer’s Attempt at Graphics Card Replacement Ends Disastrously: PCIe Slot Torn Off the Board

Gaming PCs offer tremendous flexibility, allowing users to upgrade individual components to enhance performance rather than investing in an entirely new system. For many PC gamers, swapping out the graphics card is a priority after a few years. It’s understandable, given that the graphics card is one of the most critical hardware components for maximizing gaming performance.

Chem2calWaste’s friend, as another Reddit user, aimed to rejuvenate his somewhat outdated computer by replacing the graphics card. However, his approach seems to have been too hasty, as evidenced by this picture:

If the problem isn’t immediately evident upon first glance, it’s entirely understandable, as errors of this nature are rare occurrences. It seems that during the removal of his old graphics card, the individual accidentally tore off the corresponding PCIe slot from the motherboard, leaving it noticeably absent from the board.

PC experts can deduce the mishap, a sentiment echoed by Reddit user Chem2calWaste, who confirms his suspicions: his friend neglected to release the locking mechanism on the PCIe slot before attempting its removal. Consequently, the graphics card stubbornly refused to disengage from the slot, leading to the unfortunate outcome of the slot detaching from the motherboard instead, owing to excessive force. Ouch!

If Chem2calWaste and his buddy lack a soldering station and steady hands, they probably can’t save the motherboard.

Interestingly, commenters noted another mistake. Upon closer inspection, it becomes apparent that the two RAM bars were incorrectly installed. For optimal dual-channel functionality, they should have been inserted either in the first and third slots or the second and fourth slots, not directly adjacent to each other.

However, in the grand scheme of things, this is likely the least of Chem2calWaste’s friend’s concerns at the moment.
