AMD has officially announced the release of its new high-performance video card for gaming notebooks. Alongside the Ryzen Threadripper 7000 announcement, the manufacturer unveiled the Radeon RX 7900M on Thursday, the 19th, with the promise of surpassing the performance of one of NVIDIA’s most powerful graphics chips.
Designed for Quad HD (1440p) gaming, the new notebook video card is equipped with 72 compute units based on the RDNA 3 architecture, boasting a total of 4,608 cores — 20% more than the Radeon RX 7800 XT — and 72 ray tracing accelerators. The GPU’s gaming clock is 1,825 MHz, but it can reach 2,090 MHz.
In terms of memory, the Radeon RX 7900M is equipped with 64 MB of 2nd generation Infinity Cache and 16 GB of VRAM in 18 Gbps GDDR6 modules with a 256-bit interface, resulting in a bandwidth of 576 GB/s. For comparison, the GeForce RTX 4080, in its notebook version, is equipped with 12 GB of VRAM and a 192-bit bus.
According to the manufacturer’s official benchmarks, the Radeon RX 7900M promises to outperform the GeForce RTX 4080 in 19 of the 30 games analyzed at Quad HD. The emphasis is on Cyberpunk 2077, which exhibited 36% better performance when running on the AMD GPU. It is worth noting that NVIDIA leads in most games with ray tracing enabled.
A highlight of the hardware is its chiplet design that divides the GPU’s logical blocks into GCD (graphics complex) and MCD (memory complex). The GCD is produced using a 5-nanometer process, while the MCD is fabricated at 6 nanometers. The Radeon RX 7900M operates with a TGP of 160 W but can be increased to up to 200 W with SmartShift.
The GPU includes native support for encoding and decoding in AV1, H.265/HEVC, and H.264, promising good performance for content creators in video export, streaming, and other tasks to reduce the load on the CPU.
