Samsung has stood out in the mobile market by offering support for four major Android updates and five years of security patches. This week, Google officially launched the Pixel 8 line and surprised by promising seven years of Android updates. Now, reports suggests that the South Korean company is considering extending its security updates support to more than five years.

In an interview conducted by SamMobile at SDC23 (Samsung Developers Conference 2023), Samsung engineer Shin-Chul Baik stated that the company is actively discussing how to extend security update support to more than five years.

He says that this vision aligns with Samsung’s approach to providing longer support for its devices and that the company is preparing to exceed the current five-year timeframe.

However, the SamMobile website emphasizes that this does not mean Samsung will offer Android updates for more than five years. Instead, it indicates that they are considering extending the duration of security updates.

In other words, even if your Galaxy doesn’t receive the latest Android version, it will continue to receive security patches for more than five years. Currently, Samsung is one of the leading brands when it comes to updates, even on the more basic devices.
