TikTok ended its controversial Creator Fund in December 2023 and moved on to a new monetization model: The TikTok Creativity Program. The key aspect of this program is that creators earn more and have access to higher payouts and users are rewarded for watching longer, high-quality videos. Now, is it a step up from the Creator Fund that left so many creators dissatisfied with earning power? Let’s see if this is the case and if the shift benefits creators, dive deep into the TikTok Creativity Program Beta, its features, eligibility, payout structure, and more.

What Is the TikTok Creativity Program?

A revamped version of the program, the TikTok Creativity Program Beta rewards creators for making longer, more engaging content, or videos longer than one minute. TikTok said the new program is meant to encourage creators to make original, high-quality videos that would keep the audience glued. This program is available in discrete locations at the moment including in the U.K., the U.S., France, Germany, Japan, and Korea.

How to Join the TikTok Creativity Program

Creators qualifying for this new program must abide by certain criteria to participate. Here’s a quick look at the requirements:

  1. Location: Account must be located in a participating region.
  2. Age: Creators must be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Followers: The minimum qualification is 10,000 followers.
  4. Video Views: For creators, they must have 100,000 video views within the last 30 days.

Switching over from the Creator Fund to the TikTok Creativity Program is super easy if you were in the Creator Fund! Tap the menu button and go to Creator tools, select Creator Fund, and then tap Switch. Keep in mind, however, that as soon as you join the Creativity Program you can no longer go back to the Creator Fund. If you’re not already part of the Creator Fund, then it is very much the same, except you will tap Creator Program. Then, within three days, TikTok will let applicants know whether they have been accepted or not.

Why Did TikTok Replace the Creator Fund?

In 2020 the Creator Fund was launched but there was endless criticism of low payouts which were not what creators were looking for. TikTok established a $2 billion fund to pay its creators and more reports emerged that earnings often amounted to less, averaging between $0.02 and $0.04 per 1,000 views. But many creators said they were impatient and frustrated, with some angry that the earnings failed to match the time and effort invested. To rectify these shortcomings, shooting from the hip often, TikTok can now extend its reach with the Creativity Program Beta model, which is a more lucrative model with quality and engagement as the focus.

TikTok Creator Rewards Program: Another Path to Monetization

Alongside the Creativity Program, featured back in February 2023, TikTok also launched the Creator Rewards Program. As part of this initiative, TikTok underlines how it is changing how it rewards its user base, by giving these high-quality content creators the ability to earn more while they continue to be great content creators.

According to TikTok’s desire to encourage deeper, more meaningful content, videos longer than one minute attract higher payments via the Creator Rewards Program. For the application, creators have to meet the same criteria as the Creativity Program Program and TikTok looks at applicants in terms of content quality, number of engagements, and platform guidelines.

How Does TikTok Pay Creators in the New Program?

The enhanced payout structure of the Creativity Program is one of the program’s biggest draws. Whereas the Creator Fund’s payments are fixed rates, payments in the Creativity Program are based on several proprietary TikTok metrics. Here is an overview of how payouts compare:

  1. Higher Rates: The earning potential is simply too high for the Creativity Program, with the promise of significant money, between $4.00 and $8.00 per 1,000 views. That’s a huge jump from the Creator Fund, which paid out between $0.20 and $0.40 per 1,000 views.
  2. Variable Earnings: Earnings reported by creators on the program range from $100 to $600 per million views, and some earned more than $1,000. The amount of payout is mostly affected by engagement, content quality, and conformity to TikTok guidelines, and this variation has proven fruitful for creators who want more equitable remuneration.

According to TikTok’s Creativity Program, the main focus is on quality at the expense of quantity at a time when the platform seeks to raise its content standards while also creating a sustainable income stream for its creators.

TikTok Creator Rewards vs. Creator Fund: Key Differences

The TikTok Creator Rewards Program and the Creator Fund serve the same purpose—rewarding creators—but they operate very differently:

  1. Regional Availability: Initially The Creator Fund was only available to a handful of countries, like the US, UK, France, and Spain. TikTok looks to expand its reach, as the Creativity Program Beta is already out in more nations, namely Brazil, Japan, and Korea.
  2. Content Requirements: However, the Creator Rewards Program stipulates that videos should be at least one minute long, indicating an increasing focus on longer-form content. Shorter videos didn’t have to make the Creator Fund.
  3. Increased Payouts: The new program is meant to pay creators what they should be paid, offering payouts that can be as high as 20 times higher than the Creator Fund. Depending on how one looks at it, this program could still bring in creators some $100 to $600 per million views, at least. Meanwhile, the Creator Fund, and the reported amounts, were paltry for many and left wanting.

Tips for Success in the TikTok Creativity Program

While TikTok is still developing its platform and recommended best practices, it shouldn’t be the only style of content you are sharing on there. Here is what creators can do to make the most of the new Creativity Program:

  1. Consider Landscape Format: TikTok popularized vertical video, but now, they support landscape format too, and that could have an impact on the TikTok algorithm. So a better view may be offered by landscape videos for wider scenes or group shots, so creators should test both formats.
  2. Optimize for Mobile: If you are using landscape format, make sure visuals and text are legible on smaller screens. However, this remains a top priority, so creators have to make the videos as entertaining and engaging as possible so they will not lose the viewer’s attention.
  3. Stay Updated on Trends: The more previews TikTok introduces, the trends more aware you need to be of what is popular so that creators can keep in the limelight and stay relevant to TikTok’s scrolling lovers.

Is TikTok’s Creativity Program Beta Worth It?

The biggest improvement from the Creator Fund is that there is a better payout, a focus on higher quality content, and availability across regions in the TikTok Creativity Program. The program is a promising way for creators to earn more for what they put in. The Creativity Program is a positive example that characterizes the path to a fairer and more sustainable future for creators on the platform.
