Google has rolled out a new feature in Search that lets users in the United States ask an AI to call local businesses on their behalf. The tool works with services such as pet groomers, dry cleaners, and auto repair shops. It uses Google’s Duplex technology, powered by the Gemini AI model, to conduct the calls and then delivers the results back to the user over text or email.

What the feature offers

When a user searches for a supported business type, they will see an option to have the AI check pricing or availability. Once selected, the AI asks a few questions about the request, such as the kind of service needed, timing, and how the user prefers to receive updates. The AI then places the call, identifies itself as an AI from Google, and gathers the information requested. A summary with times and prices is then sent to the user.

How it works

The calling system combines Duplex speech capabilities with Gemini reasoning. First, the system prompts the user to search for details about their needs. Then it uses those inputs to speak to the business in a natural conversational tone. After the call, it generates structured data that it sends back by text or email. The original audio is not stored and is deleted once transcription is complete.

Who can use it

This feature is available in Search to all free Google users in the United States. Users who subscribe to AI Pro or AI Ultra plans receive higher usage limits. Business owners can opt out of receiving automated calls in the profile settings of their Google Business Profile.

Why it matters

Many younger users find making phone calls a challenge, and studies show they prefer digital messaging over voice communication. This tool bridges that gap by letting an AI handle the call legwork. It also saves time for anyone who needs quick information on pricing or availability without dialing each business manually.

Business controls and privacy

Google allows businesses to opt out of the AI calls by toggling a setting in their profile. The AI clearly announces itself as an agent calling on behalf of a customer so that business owners know they are not speaking with a person. Google deletes the raw audio after transcription and only retains text summaries for improved service unless a user opts in to model training.

Expanding AI capabilities

Alongside the calling feature, Google is testing an AI Mode powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro for advanced reasoning, coding, and math. It has also begun experimenting with a Deep Search function that can generate detailed reports by performing multi-step searches and asking follow-up questions.

These tools are available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in Google Labs. Google’s new AI calling feature marks a step toward turning Search into an action-oriented assistant that can handle real-world tasks. By offering seamless voice interactions, it aims to save time and make everyday errands easier.
