Meta has introduced a new feature in the Facebook Reels composer that warns creators when their videos contain copyrighted material before they post. This built‑in copyright check helps creators catch issues before they publish and prevents the removal of audio or loss of revenue that often follow copyright claims.
Users can enable the tool during Reels creation. Once active, the feature scans audio tracks and video clips for matches against a database of copyrighted works. If it finds a problem, the composer will display an alert. Creators then have up to an hour to replace or remove the flagged content before the Reels go live.

How the Pre‑Publish Scan Works
When enabled, the censorship tool runs an automated scan immediately after the user finishes editing. The system compares media elements against catalogs of known copyright holders. If no match is found, the video is published without delay. If a match is found, the composer pauses publishing for up to sixty minutes. During that window, creators may swap out or edit the problematic segment. After an hour, the post will go live unless it still contains infringing material.
Even if a creator opts out of the pre‑publish scan, Meta will still perform its usual post‑publication review. Videos posted without the early check remain at risk of later removal or demonetisation under Meta’s standard copyright enforcement.
Meta’s Broader AI Ambitions
This update arrives as Meta reorganises its artificial intelligence work into a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs. The company has appointed Alexandr Wang, formerly CEO of Scale AI, as its chief AI officer. The move follows mixed reactions to Meta’s Llama 4 model and signals a push to regain ground against rivals like OpenAI and Google.

Superintelligence Labs will focus on advanced AI research, including artificial general intelligence. Meta plans to integrate improved AI tools across its apps and platforms—everything from Meta AI assistants and image‑to‑video ad tools to future smart‑glasses features. The new Reels copyright check underscores Meta’s effort to use AI to increase trust and reliability for creators.
As these features roll out, creators on Facebook and Instagram can rely on Meta’s tools to safeguard their work. By catching copyright issues early, the platform offers a smoother creator experience and helps users protect their content and revenue streams.
