Microsoft has released an out-of-band update named KB5061906 for Windows Server 2022 to fix a serious issue affecting Hyper-V virtual machines. Some servers running confidential virtual machines in Azure began freezing or restarting without warning. This patch restores reliability and helps keep services running smoothly.

Who Is Affected and Why It Matters

The problem mainly impacts Azure confidential virtual machines that protect data even while it is being processed. Standard Hyper-V setups are rarely affected unless they use preview or pre-production configurations. When a virtual machine freezes or restarts in the middle of a task it can cause service outages and require manual restarts. For businesses that depend on continuous operation this can mean lost revenue and frustrated users.

How to Install the Emergency Update

This update will not install automatically through Windows Update. Administrators must download and install the standalone MSU package from the Microsoft Update Catalog. To apply the fix, find the KB5061906 update, download the file, and run it on each affected server. If you have not yet applied the May 2025 security update KB5058385 and you use Windows Server 2022 with Hyper-V, you should apply this out-of-band update first.

Repeat Patches Show Microsoft’s Rapid Response

This is not the first time Microsoft has issued out-of-band fixes for Hyper-V. In the past year emergency patches addressed container launch failures on Windows Server 2019 and 2025. In October 2023 updates caused boot errors on Hyper-V hosts and required quick fixes. Even in 2022 Microsoft rushed updates to fix issues that prevented new virtual machines from booting. Microsoft’s willingness to release emergency updates demonstrates its commitment to keeping server environments stable. Administrators should watch the Windows Health dashboard and subscribe to Windows Message Center alerts to learn about urgent fixes as soon as they become available.
