Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects Apple to begin making AirPods with infrared cameras in 2026 and to launch a lighter AirPods Max in 2027. The cameras could guide users and share visual data with other Apple devices. A future AirPods Pro model may add heart rate monitoring via a new chip. The current AirPods Max weigh almost fourteen ounces, and a lighter design would help users who wear them for long periods. These updates aim to tie wearables more closely to Apple Intelligence and new iOS features.

AirPods with Infrared Cameras

Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple will add infrared cameras to AirPods in 2026. These cameras will not record images like an iPhone camera. Instead, they will sense motion and help with computer vision tasks such as guiding a user to a location. The data from the cameras could be processed on the device or passed to an iPhone to power new Apple Intelligence features. Users may also see a live translation feature when iOS 19 arrives.

Health and Translation Features

Kuo has suggested that a third-generation AirPods Pro or an update to the Pro two may gain heart rate monitoring using a new H3 chip. This feature would be similar to what the latest Powerbeats Pro offers today. Observers have also speculated that AirPods’ cameras could support live translation by listening and speaking through an iPhone’s speaker. Such features would bring a new level of convenience for travelers and health-minded users alike.

Lighter AirPods Max in 2027

According to Kuo, the updated AirPods Max planned for 2027 will be lightweight. The model presently has a weight of 13.6 ounces or 384.8 grams. A lighter design would improve comfort for those who wear the headphones for long work sessions or travel. This update follows support added in early 2025 for lossless audio and personalized spatial audio on the USB-C version.

What This Means for Users

Camera-equipped AirPods and a lighter Max model show how Apple is integrating more sensors and new designs into wearables. The infrared cameras will not replace your iPhone camera, but will add visual data for smarter audio and navigation. Health features like heart rate monitoring will extend the fitness and wellness focus of AirPods Pro. A lighter over-ear headphone will help users who value comfort and sound quality on the move. The products may show up during Apple’s usual schedules in late 2026 and late 2027. Anyone using AirPods regularly can expect to enjoy new tools and even more comfort.
