Apple is working hard to improve Siri by using advanced artificial intelligence. The company is creating a new version called “LLM Siri” to make the assistant more helpful and easier to talk to. This change comes after some problems with the earlier version of Siri.

Why Apple Is Changing Siri

Siri’s initial version, relying on AI, did not perform as good as Apple desired. It found it difficult to respond to people in helpful ways. Trying to add AI capabilities to the older version of Siri caused more trouble for Apple. Employees said fixing one issue would lead to more issues.

Apple also started working on AI later than other companies. Some leaders at Apple were not sure about investing a lot of money in AI without knowing exactly what the results would be. Since Apple approached the market cautiously, it fell behind other tech companies.

According to Apple’s AI leader, John Giannandrea, users were not interested in using chatbots similar to ChatGPT. He explained to workers that people could decide to disable these applications. He also did not fight hard enough for more funding. Other executives at Apple were worried about his quiet style and believed he did not take enough action to meet the growing competition in AI.

Marketing also created a problem. The company mentioned that it would provide a smarter Siri and updated tools in various apps. Still, the features were not perfected and had to wait for a later release. Consequently, users were disappointed, and this also caused more problems for the company.

Building a Better Siri

Solving these issues, Apple is starting from scratch and making a new Siri. The Zurich AI team is creating a system based on a large language model. Siri is now designed to be able to chat with us and respond to our questions more effectively.

Apple has started using differential privacy to enhance the performance of Siri. This way, data collected from users does not put their privacy at risk. Data is processed through the service on your device, and only the new knowledge is sent to Apple.

Siri could now turn to the internet to help find an answer. The company is talking to other AI search tools to help Siri find and explain information. One of the companies Apple may work with is Perplexity, which builds smart AI search tools. This would allow Siri to give users helpful answers by pulling from many trusted sources.

A Slow and Careful Comeback

There is a lot to look forward to with Siri, and it might take a while for all users to notice the difference. It is being suggested that Siri’s full update won’t be ready until 2027. Apple is taking precautions to test the new version before it comes out.

John Giannandrea is no longer responsible for working on Siri or AI products. Leaders of Apple are considering a private way for Schiller to leave. Still, he is planning to live here for the time being. The company does not want to let its long-term engineers leave because they joined Apple when Jobs was involved. Siri’s improvements demonstrate that the company is all about doing things well. Apple is planning to make its voice assistant more reliable and secure for users by creating a brand new system focused on privacy.
