Apple has released a new update for its MagSafe Charger, but the company keeps quiet about what exactly changed. The update bumps the firmware version from 2A143 to 2A146. If you own a MagSafe Charger, the update will install automatically when you use it. You will not get a notification, but your charger will work with the new software once it is done.

MagSafe Chargers are round, magnetic chargers that snap onto iPhones and some MacBooks. They make wireless charging easier because the magnets help align the charger perfectly. This new update likely fixes small issues or improves the charger, but Apple did not share details.

What the Update Might Do

The charger operates through its firmware, which is equivalent to brain operations. The firmware instruction set enables chargers to communicate properly with iPhones and MacBooks. The firmware update enables better detection and smoother charging methods and resolves software defects that produce device problems. One among many fixes introduced by this update may solve the random failure of certain chargers.

Although Apple does not provide information about these updates, they still hold important value. Think of it like updating an app on your phone. You might not notice big changes, but things work better behind the scenes.

How to Check Your MagSafe Charger’s Firmware

Want to see if your charger has the new update? Follow these easy steps.

Use the MagSafe Charger to fasten your iPhone before you move to the next step. Use your iPhone to connect to the MagSafe Charger before opening the Settings application. Tap General, then tap About. Scroll down until you see the Apple MagSafe Charger under the accessories list. Tap it, and you will see the firmware version. If it says 2A146, your charger is updated. If not, leave it plugged in and connected to your iPhone for a while. The update happens automatically.

Which Devices Work With MagSafe Chargers

The MagSafe Charger works with iPhones, starting with the iPhone 12. The 2024 MagSafe Charger from Apple provides 25W charging speed to work with iPhone 16 models despite supporting previous iPhone versions. Although the MagSafe Charger functions with iPhone 12 and 13 devices, it offers slower charging performance. Users who buy the iPhone 16e model must accept slower 25W charging since it is unavailable for that version. Your MagSafe Charger will function properly with the mentioned phone model, yet it will not achieve maximum charging speed.

What Is Firmware?

A device receives instructions from the software known as firmware, which determines operational behaviour. The MagSafe Charger determines the charging rate, stopping point, and device communication methods through firmware. The software updates delivered to the charger continue to enhance performance by solving issues and learning new functions.

Why Updates Matter for Chargers

One would naturally wonder about the necessity of charger software updates. Updates for your phone are necessary to resolve bugs, as are charger updates. Apple may develop safety and performance improvements and compatibility adjustments for the MagSafe Charger throughout the future.

For example, if a new iPhone comes out, the MagSafe Charger might need an update to work perfectly with it. These silent updates make sure your charger stays useful for years.

What Users Say About MagSafe Updates

Some people online say past updates made their MagSafe Chargers work better. One user said their charger used to get too hot, but an update fixed it. Another noticed their iPhone charged faster after an update. While not everyone sees changes, these updates keep your charger in good shape.

If your charger acts strange after an update, try unplugging it for a minute. Then, plug it back in. This often fixes small issues.

Apple’s Quiet Way of Improving Gadgets

Apple loves to update its products quietly. AirPods, Apple Watches, and even chargers get these behind-the-scenes updates. It is Apple’s way of ensuring everything works smoothly without bothering you with technical details.

The recent update brings a minute but vital change to MagSafe enthusiasts. The update indicates that Apple pays attention to every component within its device network. All models of the iPhone 12 to iPhone 16 can continue to use the MagSafe Charger effectively.

Users should recognize that the MagSafe Charger contains a tiny brain that becomes wiser through each software update.
