Apple Admits 64GB Isn’t Enough New iPhones and iPads Start at 128GB

For eight years, Apple sold iPhones and iPads starting with 64GB of storage. Now, that’s changing. Every new iPhone and iPad (except the iPad Pro) starts at 128GB. Here is why Apple made this shift and what it means for you.

Why 64GB Was a Problem

Back in 2017, 64GB felt like enough. But over time, things changed.

  • Bigger Photos and Videos New cameras take sharper pictures and 4K videos, which fill storage fast.
  • Larger Apps and Updates Apps like games and social media need more space. Even iOS updates required deleting files to install.
  • Apple’s New AI Features Tools like smarter Siri need 7GB of space, leaving little room on 64GB devices.

Apple tried fixes like auto-deleting unused apps, but this backfired. Imagine losing your subway map app right before a trip because your iPhone deleted it to save space.

What Apple Changed

Starting in 2025, all new iPhones (like the iPhone 16e) and iPads (including the iPad Air) begin at 128GB. The iPad Pro starts at 256GB. This means

  • More Room to Breathe You can store more photos, apps, and videos without stress.
  • Better for AI Features Apple’s new tools work smoothly without eating up all your storage.
  • Same Prices Apple didn’t raise prices. The iPhone 16e costs the same as older models with less storage.

What This Means for You

  • Buying New: You get double the storage at no extra cost.
  • Keeping Old Devices: If you have a 64GB iPhone or iPad, you will need to manage space carefully.
  • iCloud Users: Apple still gives only 5GB of free iCloud storage. You might need to pay for more.

Tips for 64GB Device Owners

  1. Use iCloud: Store photos and files online.
  2. Delete Old Apps: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage to remove apps you don’t use.
  3. Limit Video Quality: Record videos in 1080p instead of 4K to save space.

Why Apple Waited So Long

Apple kept 64GB for years to keep prices low. Small-scale chip production conducted by Apple proved to be costly for them. By using a storage capacity of 128GB Apple currently saves money and sustains technological readiness for future devices.

The Big Picture

The shift demonstrates that Apple keeps an ear toward what their clients require. Modern life needs more storage. Having 128GB storage capacity enables you to take pictures and install applications and activate AI features without persistent deleting of files.

The growing demand for 128GB or more storage benefits Apple’s customers as well as the company itself. Apple makes both new customers and itself more competitive by giving their devices additional storage capacity. Users who utilize outdated devices should implement the recommendations described in this text. The greater capacity will provide more space if you decide to upgrade your device.
