X is testing a free version of their Grok AI chatbot for the first time, a product of Elon Musk’s AI company xAI. While they started off as a service that only paid users can use with a couple limitations, grok is now available to select non paying users in certain regions.
Testing a Limited Free Version
App researchers say that users in geographic regions that are selected by Grok also point to the limits in queries on the free version of Grok. At the moment, users can make about 10 inquiries approximately every two hours utilizing the Grok-2 model, or about 20 inquiries with the Grok-2 mini model. Free users, meanwhile, can also tap into Grok’s image analysis feature up to three times per day.
Free access is growing but on the condition that joining users meet specific criteria. Verification requires that an account is at least seven days old, and a linked phone number is necessary.
Enhanced Capabilities with Grok-2
In August, Grok launched the more advanced Grok-2 model, with image generation capabilities and FLUX.1 model courtesy of Black Forest Labs, to increase the AI abilities of Grok. Twelve weeks ago xAI added image understanding to the mix, enabling the AI to interpret uploaded images and to answer user queries on them. The model can even now explain jokes hidden in images, something Musk says will get better with time.
xAI is expanding its reach beyond free users to a broader rollout with the news that Grok’s enhanced image understanding was previously limited to Premium and Premium+ users, but now is becoming available to testing free users. It may well be that the expansion is all about getting more user feedback, having a faster cycle of model improvement while having more competition with other leading AI models like ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
New Developments in Grok’s AI Capabilities
xAI said with plans to augment the AI’s interactive potential with developer APIs and on X, appears to be intent on making Grok’s multimodal capabilities more broadly available. Musk has also told Grok users that he’s thinking of expanding its abilities to understand different document file formats, responding directly to users asking if their file types (like PDFs) will ever work in Grok.
In fact, X wants to attract paying users with new features to X’s broader AI strategy. For example, as Premium+ users we were just gifted Radar, which allows you to track trends as they happen and understand what X is talking about by spotting which topics are trending across our whole network.
The aim of free access testing is to develop a larger base of users in order to obtain different feedback, and add more features to Grok to compete in an ever growing AI market.
