“You can follow me on Bluesky.” This message has been shared by thousands of users on X (formerly Twitter) as they leave the platform, which was acquired by Elon Musk, and switch to Bluesky—a platform created by Jack Dorsey, one of Twitter’s original founders.

On November 14, Bluesky reported a record-breaking surge in registrations, with over a million new users joining within 24 hours. This sudden growth even caused temporary server downtime. The platform’s rising popularity isn’t random; it’s tied to recent events, including Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. elections, and dissatisfaction with Elon Musk’s management of X.
Since Musk took over Twitter, the platform has faced criticism for becoming a hub for misinformation, bots, and hate speech. This shift has driven users to seek alternatives like Mastodon, while companies like Meta have also jumped in with competitors, such as Threads, to capitalize on the opportunity.
Elon Musk’s Government Role Sparks Mass Exodus from X
With Donald Trump as president and Elon Musk holding a government position, many users are leaving X, fearing the platform will further amplify fake news, hate speech, and racist content. Even major media outlets like The Guardian have abandoned X, labeling it a “toxic media” platform.
This exodus has created a ripple effect, prompting countless users to follow the lead of large companies and media organizations in seeking alternatives. For many, the ideal replacement is Bluesky—a platform developed by the founder of Twitter.
Bluesky is considered an ideal alternative because it offers a very similar interface and mechanics to X, but without the bots and violent content. Many large accounts from X have already made the switch to Bluesky, which has influenced individual users to do the same.
Is Bluesky new Twitter?
It’s difficult to make a definitive conclusion since Bluesky is a relatively new social network, having launched in April 2024. However, despite its growing popularity, it seems likely that X will continue to have more users for the time being. While Bluesky has increased its user base from 6 million to 15 million in just 90 days, it is still far behind X, which has over 300 million users.
Bluesky may eventually fade into obscurity, much like Threads did a few months ago. When Threads was first launched by Meta, it broke records with new user registrations, but interest quickly stalled, and the app began to lose users.
With Musk now in a government position and concerns over misinformation on X, Meta has also seen a surge in Threads registrations, with 15 million new accounts recently. Only time will tell if Bluesky, Threads, or another platform will emerge as a true alternative to the former Twitter.
